Of course, there was plenty of bad news on Friday. First of all, their friend, their chief, the one to whom they referred lovingly as “Teacher,” was dead. And, most of us in this room know the terrible feeling of the death of someone we love. And, even keener still is the feeling of profound loss that accompanies the death of someone who has loved us. And so, that first weekend after the death of Jesus brought an intense and agonizing pain and sadness to the disciples.

As we all know, this is the weekend on which our country commemorates the birthday of Atlanta’s own Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. It’s the weekend on which our country observes a holiday in his honor and memory. And, it’s a King holiday weekend like no other.
